Meeting John Barrowman
cartoon lynne
[info]meepettemu
In three weeks, I will be thirty-two. This year seems to have flown by.

For my birthday, hamster bought me/us tickets to go see La Cage Aux Folles, which was on Friday just gone. It was amazing. I loved it. Barrowman as Zsa Zsa was great. I don't have a TV, so I've never really paid that much attention to him, and somehow, had always thought of him as quite small. I also had a small moment beforehand, when I wondered if I wasn't actually going to see John Inman, so was quite relieved to find it was in fact, Barrowman (this was recorded and aired the night we saw it. he's singing from 1:50 if you want to see as little as possible of Paul O'Grady!) He's also somewhat taller than I had thought!

He had a small moment when he corpsed on stage, and we all cheered. It was beautiful. As hasmter and her housemate put it, this version was a bit more "tits and ass", than the previous version they'd seen, and I can see why - they could have made a lot more of some of the more emotional parts, but it was brilliant, and well done, and they had a standing ovation at the end.

Barrowman was collecting for Macmillan at the end, so I got to walk past him, and I swear, I turned just a little bit bi in that instant, developing an instant crush that, if I'm honest, hasn't quite gone away. It's not strong enough to buy a tv though... (not when there's the internet, anyway).

It was a fabulous way to start my birthday and makes me very happy.

Does life get much better?
cartoon lynne
[info]meepettemu
Seriously. I feel like I keep repeating myself, but you know. What can I say?

I now have a job. Sure, it's not great, but it beats no job. It can only get better. And today, when I went to give in the work I'd done for my lecturer, she gave me the paper copy of the PCOS paper we've just had published. So I'm now a published author, and very happy about it.

It's still one of those "on paper, doesn't look so good" things, but in my heart, it's happy.

And my, do I sound sappy. I don't care. I'm happy.

writer's block..
catseyes
[info]meepettemu
I'm just killing time until the hamster gets here.

the 'writer's block' question is "what was your first job?".

As a child growing up, it was something of a war zone between my parents. My mum had no money, and my dad didn't see why he should give her any, much less us pocket money. And in fairness, we lived in the middle of nowhere, with one village shop about 1.5 miles away. For the most part, we didn't *need* money.

But as a teenage girl, 'girl' being the important part of this equation, money for Things comes in useful once a month-ish. And being painfully shy, it was incredibly hard to ask my mother.

So somehow (and I have no idea how i GOT the job) at about 14, I landed a job at the local hotel, a mile or so away, working mostly in the ballroom as a waitress.

this was the days before minimum wage, so I worked 5 hours 6.30-11.30 1-5 times a week (Christmas being a busy time), and I earnt £6.30 per night. I'd say "before tax", but you'd have to be working an AWFUL lot of those to even have to *pay* tax. (If you worked a 6hour shift christmas day, they paid £25)

It was great. Not least because of the food. We used to do functions, and this was before beef on the bone was dis and re-allowed, so each table used to have a large rack of beef, with three large pots of veg; roast potatoes, sprouts, carrots, usually. Starters and deserts also.

Now, as everywhere pretty much, we allowed doggybags; if a table asked for their beef, we wrapped it up and gave it to them. Mostly we hoped that they didn't, cos then we'd wrap it up and take it. Technically, it was stealing I guess, but whatever wasn't taken home was put into large binbags and binned. At the end of the night, you'd see ten or so binliners of wasted food. The managers knew it happened and turned a blind eye, I guess figuring that at least it was coming in useful, and even back then, those of us waitressing were for the most part, either students, or very poor.

We used to try and keep favourite deserts too. We'd never not offer them to customers; if they were in the kitchen when we needed them, we'd serve them, but my, there were some deserts that we really hoped would be leftover at the end of the night. IF you were lucky enough to get beef (basically, you only got them from YOUR tables, you didn't ask other teams if any of theirs didn't want theirs), then you took them home. It was a very beefy-smelling bus home, although in winter, it was like having in-built central heating, or, if you lived close enough, which i did for the first couple of years, you, traditionally, walked home, with you and your colleague who lived close by, stuffing yourselves as you went. And when you got home, you would generally be pounced on by all of your family. This was good meat. Great taste, good quality. And we didn't eat beef often. My family loved my job for that!

We used to serve coffee as a default, but if someone asked for tea, they'd get a mains plate, with a pot of tea, a cup, a pot of milk, and sugar on it. Generally, you could get two of those on a tray.

Each plate should have a doily on, and each tray a tray-liner. this is important. Lack of one of these has disastrous consequences. Tea used water that was kept boiling until it came out of the tap. I had two of these one night, so took them on the same tray, but we'd run out of tray-liners. Half way across the kitchen, the newly-poured teapot plate slid on the tray and emptied itself over my arm. For some reason, I just froze. It felt like the entire kitchen stopped to look at me. I remember a chef shouting at me: "put the tray down!" but I was feet away from a surface and didn't feel like I could move. A manager came up at speed and took the tray, telling me to go into the staff toilet and take off my shirt.

My over-riding thought was "but I can't, you're a lesbian!" (Yes, I know.) But I did. I had massive burns all across my left forearm. I spent the rest of the night with frozen peas on my arm, waiting for the work bus home.

That was the week my parents were away. When they got back, I'd had my jaw broken by a girl in a pub, and had an accident on my moped leaving me with massive bruising and lymphodoema in my left leg. You can imagine the looks on their faces when I went limping out to meet them as they pulled up. Didn't stop them going away in the future though.

[info]meepettemu
that's sickly-ness, not sick lines.

But you know, overall, I cannot remember a time when I have been happier. I cannot remember being 9 months into a relationship, and still be so excited to see the person I'm seeing, to be thinking "tomorrow, tomorrow I'll see her". Or be so looking forward to spending so much time with someone, to be so compatible.

I'm never bored with her; we have similar interests, similar likes and dislikes. We sit on the bed and picnic (this may be a recurring theme in my life..), I read to her, books, LJ, or tell stories. She shares with me radio 4 comedy, and dubious DVDs (dubious only for their humour content, rather than any age-related reasons).

We go out, we walk. We get wet in the rain, and burnt in the sun. We browse bookshops, I follow her round the clothes shops, often whining like a petulant child who has had enough hours ago and just needs to go home. Or to be ensconced in Starbucks with their favourite drink and a pastry.

After tomorrow, we have a month together, with only 5 days apart. I guess that time will indeed tell. If she still wants to be near me, after seeing what I'm like being with someone else that long, it will be impressive.

We will spend a fortnight at home, dog-sitting, whilst my parents are in Spain, and then we go there ourselves. We spend a week at the flat, and then what will hopefully be four amazing days in Barcelona, wandering along Las Ramblas, into the market, where I will make her try strange tapas, and she will try it with that face that looks a bit like a dog chewing a thistle, and a resigned air of "i'm only doing this because you make me". and occasionally, she will be surprised, and find something she likes. Mostly, she will be glad when each small ordeal is over, and look towards me for some reward, which is generally going to be the sight of me laughing at the faces she is pulling.

We will go to La Sagrada Familiar, and hopefully Gaudi's park to the north, and mew over the plights of the animals in small cages. I will avoid coffee, as I have never managed to find the right Spanish words for the way I like it, and we will drown ourselves in sunshine and diet coke.

Does this sound idyllic? Am I painting a vision of something that can't occur? I think not. Our times together generally involve a lot of laughter and joy. Being me, we cannot avoid the deep conversations that occur, and certainly it hasn't always been an easy road, but I do know, and she knows, that however our lives go on, and whoever else is there, we want each other and are happy to work on that.

There's a picture on my sidebar that comes up every now and then; it just came up as I wrote. serendipitous. It is of us lying together in the grass in the sun. For both of us, it is one of our favourite images of us. It seeps a happiness that we can't explain, but even at the time when we had split up, and I had taken her somewhere with my friends, because she had asked to come beforehand and I had said she could, people who didn't know, were telling us we looked good together. People tell us they like seeing us together, and for me, that is confirmation that the internal is being reflected out. And I like this.

Things when waking, are probably not what they appear
cartoon lynne
[info]meepettemu
I woke up, all nice and comfy, unable to believe it was quite morning (the neighbours had a party til late, and I have decided, I really don't like lady gaga. I don't like any of the other songs either, but i don't know what they were. 2am music blaring through your brain is enough to make anyone not like it. Buuut, I digress).

So, morning has arrived. Beautiful, sunny day. Or, wet and windy. Pick whichever version you feel is best. Personally, I want to know where the summer has gone.

And here I am, pondering the fact that I need to clean my ear. I think that my body pays attention when I'm not listening, and sets out to spite me. Just yesterday I was saying to hamster that I felt my new piercing had magic piercing-cleaning abilities, as I had somehow forgotten it needed cleaning 3x a day, and had been managing about 1 a day or once every 2 days. Not 6 hours after saying this, did my ear turn a bit red and shouty.

Cue me on the phone "my ear hurts. It hurts!" and the rather quicksmart return of the Savlon. So this morning I wake and think "quick! Must clean ear!"; some kind of biological imperative that says "hamster has hard pillows. This ear needs to be in the best shape it can be, to cope. Get Savlon on NOW!"

So I sit up, grab cotton pads and savlon, and apply savlon to cotton pad. And then I think "why is it fizzing? Savlon doesn't fizz!"

But you know what? The bottle of diet coke sitting next to the bed does. I'm not sure that it would have cleaned my ear as well, had I got that far.

I then gave myself a good half an hour (after successfully going on to apply Savlon) before making coffee, in case my befuddled brain decided to try drinking, oh you know, straight from the kettle or something. But I am pleased to announce that all is well. Now I just need to get dressed, and face the day....

I'm baaaaack!

Thanks mostly to the wonderfulnes of [info]being_here I am back in the land of the mids. With its wonderful weather, and multitude of jobs going, it's quite the place to be.

But aside from anything, it's home. The job hunt is 'going'. I have a place to be in the dry, Kerrang plays on the radio again, wifi is the best invention ever, what more do I need?

Very very happy to be back :-D

Has it really been a year?
bum
[info]meepettemu
It seems it has. Today, a year ago, I was at the house of Lee and Claire, with two of my best friends in the world, babysitting, as it was Claire's teacher night party end of year thing.

Lee made us the most fabulous cake, and supplied us with plenty of chocolate. It was like being 14 and babysitting again (expect I didn't get left chocolate and cakes then).

It was a mixture of nights for me. I thought it would be the first time i didn't hear from T in a day (and then she sent me a text at 11.40 unable to let the day end without saying hi), and whilst being sad, seemed fitting that my time in Cov ended with Dee and Carey.

Lee and Claire got home to find me reading out loud Bete Du Jour's 'first time with a virtual lady' and trying not to cry from laughter. Hilarity ensued with Butch the dancing wonder dog (I miss butch!) and amusement from all involved.

It was a great way to spend my last weekend. More so if it means Lee's making more cakes for my return *grins*

This time last year, I was almost as miserable as I've ever been. In terms of happiness, I've hardly looked back. Leaving was exactly the right thing to do, at exactly the right time. I don't see how I could have lived much more in that situation, nor could I have easily extricated myself from it without moving away away.

So much for the people who told me i "needed" counselling, or that I wasn't strong, or any of those things. I'm happier now than I've ever been, and although marginally scared of moving back (having no job, in this climate? not so fun), it's not the end of the world..

I'm looking forward to this, to going back, to going home.

Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and upload, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.

Promise Promise - You me at six

Piece of my heart - The Killers

Pandora - Madina Lake

And not in my player, but i like it:

Last night, after he'd consumed a bottle of wine, my stepfather, who doesn't usually drink, was waxing lyrical. One of the things he said to me was "I don't know if i agree with your sexuality." I responded saying that agreeing with it or not didn't come into it. It was what it was; I didn't *choose* it.

His rejoinder was "I don't know if i can be bothered to talk about it"

It hurt.

Work today. I knew it would be bad from the moment i realised that Ant would be sitting on my row. She's a boor and I've disliked her since my first (and only) interaction with her.

IT's very quiet at work. people tend to read. And given that the collective IQ of call centres is not known for its great heights, they tend to read trashy magazines. And so i heard, in the dulcit tones of the boor: "He's paying for a vagina by being a bikini model".

My supervisor replied with "she's a she".
"No, he's a he".

At this point I piped up "No, SHE, is a she".

"he's a he".

I lost my temper then (i'd have been more patient with someone i liked) and pretty much shouted at her saying "she's a she, and don't even try going there with me".

"He's a he, he's got a male body".

"and in her head, she's a woman, she just doesn't quite have the body to match yet".

"he's a he".

"So, you judge people on what they look like, do you?" (pertinent; she must weigh over 20stone)

"No, I don't judge people at all".

"so, she's a she then."

She had no comeback. I'm sure i was bitched about after i left the room, but frankly, i don't care.

I just don't get how people can sit and say "I don't judge", whilst making a judgement. And about something they know nothing about.

The adventures of Chloe the cat
chloe
[info]meepettemu
The cat's been getting more and more bold this week. We have *gasp* a garden! And the cat, who has never been a huge fan of the outdoors, has decided that there is a pressing need to investigate this World Of Green. I'm thinking the desire has been stimulated by all of the aloe she's been eating; she needs to know what ELSE is out there she can eat.

Anyhow, yesterday she was moaning at me to let her out of my room about 8am (we have a dog, and the way our house is laid out, my room is in the pathway from my parents' room to anywhere else, so unless i want Dog at stupid hours of the morning, it's the most sensible thing. So off she went. Five minutes later i could hear her miaowing, and i was thinking it was fairly quiet for her, so i decided she was ok and ignored her. Mum got out of the shower, and opened my bedroom door thinking she was IN my room (my mother has a great habit of opening my bedroom door if she feels there's a need (generally when the cat is either wailing to come in, or go out of it. She doesn't get that sometimes, there's a REASON I haven't moved to let the cat in, nor does she think "She has company, maybe i should leave her to it. Nope, her house; if she wants to come in, she will..)

So i say out loud "she doesn't want to come in"., thinking mother is letting her in. No cat appears, but wailing continues, and then it strikes me, and we dash downstairs, to find the cat, shut OUTSIDE on the patio, wailing because she thinks she's been left for ever. Mum sweers she was outside for a second, and that Chloe was upstairs when she went out. This is the third time this week this has happened. I fear i have an escapologist cat.

Right now, she's on my lap. It's inconvenient, but she doesn't recognise the laptop as a legitimate reason for not having Cat On Lap and will just work herself in between. The only thing she does recognise as legitimate is a plate, but to be honest, the plate is just not as nice to stroke, neither does it purr at you.

Wooo, baaaa! (stolen from gui)

Tired of all of those surveys made up by high school kids?! "Have you ever kissed someone? Missed someone? Told someone you loved them? Drank alcohol?" Bah!

So instead, here are 49 questions for people who are a little older.

Sunbathing

*How many colleges did you attend?

Very, VERY excited! All those THINGS, and so CHEAP! :o)

*Beach or lake?
Hmm. Can't i have a beach AT the lake?

moving or working. or being made redundant

So I'd talked about it, even said i would. But until you've had to make that irrevocable step, nothing's final. In my head I'd begun to think "maybe i should stay; i have a job here" etc etc.

My entire office was made redundant yesterday without warning. 250 jobs lost, July.

So i guess no there's no real reason to stay, but I'm really hating the fact that i have no choice, no safety net there any more.

The office closed yesterday so i had the afternoon off, but it's work as usual today, so we're all going in.
